A Well-Told Tale of Terror

Slade House: A Novel, by David Mitchell, (Random House), 256 pages, release date 27 October, 2015

David Mitchell’s Slade House is a paranormal thriller. There’s the house itself—large, with elaborate gardens, and somehow occupying a larger space than the dimensions of the street it’s on make possible. Then there are the guests who “check in, but can never leave,” as the Eagles put it when singing about the Hotel California. Every nine years, someone visits Slade House and is never seen again.

Mitchell does a solid job of offering readers enough connections that they can almost, almost put the pieces together—almost, but not quite. Start this book on a Friday evening if you can. It’s definitely a tale to read in the dark, and you’ll find yourself “just one more chapter”-ing long past your usual bed time.
